I came up with sq root 98 but my friend got 7 sq root of 2, are either of us right? thanks!

The two results are equivalent; both are correct.

Hey --- both of you have the same answer.
The square root of 98 is 9.8994949 or 9.9.
The value of 7(2)^1/2 is 9.8994949 or 9.9.

Both of you are right, since 7^2=49.
