x² - 2x = 8
==> set equal to zero by subtracting 8 from both sides
x² - 2x - 8 = 0
==> factor as trinomial
(x - 4)(x + 2) = 0
==> set each equation equal to zero individually
x - 4 = 0 ==> x = 4
x + 2 = 0 ==> x = -2
So, you have two answers: x = -2 or x = 4.
