There's no rule against tackling a player by the hair. If it extends below the helmet, it's considered part of the uniform.

"The NFL official observer at the Steelers game said there has never been a rule making it illegal to bring down a runner by his hair. After former Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams was tackled twice in 2003 by his long dreadlocks, NFL head of officials Mike Pereira made it a point to remind teams that it is legal to tackle runners by their hair.
"The hair is part of the uniform," Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said."

The penalty was not given for grabbing the hair, as it was Larry Johnson of the Chiefs who made the tackle. The penalty was given because he wouldn't let go and then pulled up on Polamalu's hair. If hair is outside the helmet, it is considered part of the uniform and can be legally used to make a tackle.

Yeah, I believe that is the current policy put forth by the NFL up until this proposed change. The hair becomes part of the uniform and it is up to each player to decide if they want to risk being pulled down by their hair. I don't see a problem with the way it is.

The penalty was not for tackling by the hair, the hair is considered part of the jersey. What the penalty was for was that the player who tackled him, I think it was Johnson of KC, pulled him up by the hair after he was on the ground. It was an unsportsman like conduct penalty.

Funny, I remember something like that against K.C., only it was ruled the other way, because holding has to do with grabbing part of the opponents body. You sure you got this straight? Not trying to argue, cause you could have caught a different game, and another ref might have ruled different. I just remember Polamolu was PISSED. ( I think it was Larry Johnson that dropped him too.....need to ask Blitzburgh, he would know this)

* TheOnlyBelden......Is that punk Bart still giving you crap? Can you believe he had the gal to report me for calling him a loser, considering what he said in his posts? Crazy man.

It was Larry Johnson that pulled his hair. I agree that they should have to keep the hair under the helmet completely or keep it at a certain length. It's a safety issue. They get their hair pulled in a tackle as they are running forward and their neck could get broken.

I've got nothing against long hair, but it's getting ridiculous! It's 3 feet long now! It is usually not even their real hair! It should never be past the name, and if you get tackled by it - tough luck!

it is legal to tackle by the hair. They (the NFL) has ruled that the hair is part of the uniform and can be used. You can reach your hand inside the pads and jersey however that will be called horse collar(Thanks to my man Roy Williams)
and troy pile-a-doo-doo is how you say and spell that losers name.

i agree, not to mention it looks ridiculous, if i was a player, i'd rip him down by his hair, i always made fun of the goofy players who had the long dreads, or long poofy hair, and now theres a couple new guys on the 49ers with it, it looks stupid, and there should be no penalty for hair grabbing, you can bring them down by their arms and legs, theyre part of your body, so is your hair
