My friend thinks naruto is better

Hmn..that is a very good question, but difficult to answer. I'm a big fan of both, but I'll try to answer as neutrally as I can.
Both Dragonball Z and Naruto are from two totally different generations. Dragonball z first began in 1984, and Naruto made it's manga debut in 1999. Naruto is catered to fit the current generation, while DBZ was geered more towards the kids of it's time. Dragonball Z is a classic that introduced many people overseas to the fighting style anime genre. If not for Dragonball Z, we probably wouldn't HAVE Naruto, as the creator of Naruto, Kishimoto, was admittedly influenced by Akira Toriyama's style. (he, [Kishimoto], even admitted that Naruto, in his bright orange jump suit, was inspired by Goku) Not only that, but it's hard to tell if Viz would have even begun translating and lisencing the manga overseas, or consequently the anime, without the popularity of Dragonball Z to pave the way.
Dragonball Z in all it's glory, was an 80's lovechild. It dealt more with the supernatural; the OTHERWORLDLY. The Aliens. The futuristic. Things that were big back in the 80's. It also dealt with family, (i.e. Goku, Gohan, Chichi, the bond between Piccolo-san and Gohan, etc.) something that was also big at that time. Naruto on the other hand, is slightly different. Yes, it deals with the supernatural, (demons), but that's about it. It's set in a 'traditional' village setting, a clear contrast to the huge cities we reside in today. (and also to the futuristic domes Toriyama had his DBZ characters live in) See the contrasts? People in the 80's dreamt of the future, but those of us in the current generation have seen so much technology that the magic is gone. Most of us are enthralled by the past.
Another contrast in Naruto is the fact that we barely get to see any parents. This is a clear reference to our own generation, where traditional nuclear families (such as Goku, Chichi, Gohan) aren't as mainstream. There are even a couple people on Naruto who don't HAVE parents. And the main thing the Naruto anime/manga deals with? Ninja. Something most everyone these days are interested in.
In short, regardless of preferences, Naruto would not exist, (or rather, it would not be the Naruto we know and love) if DBZ had not gained the popularity and following that it had. So I suppose in a round about way, to answer your question, it would be Dragonball Z.

I enjoyed Dragon Ball Z but Naruto is way better because the story is much more profound about life and its struggles while DBZ is just fighting and getting stronger, Naruto gives an insight on the background of what made a character become what they are whether he good or evil. While DBZ I love it but it really doesnt give any reason on why evil characters just want to destroy everything for no apparent reason (Cough cough Frieza, Cell,Buu,Broly, Janemba Etc.) And Goku and friends are always up to fighting to protect the earth and getting stronger( Which I have nothing against) but it just gets old that they just power up get stronger and thats it.

People from Naruto are weak compared; their powers are tenuous. If you watch Dragon Ball Z or GT, there would be no questions.

Naruto is the best, it's my favorite show! DragonBall Z used to be my favorite show, but then my best friend introduced me to Naruto. Naruto wins if it was DragonBall Z vs Naruto, but DragonBall Z is a really good show too, I WAS addicted to it, also DragonBall GT is a really good show.

I guess naruto will..It rocks..Dragon ballz is also good but naruto is best..It feels really different watching naruto than Dragonballz..I'm votin' for naruto..
