It depends on the type of book. Here are some examples:

Harlequin (main line) 50,000 words
Harlequin Desire 70,000 words
Zebra Romance line 70,000 to 85,000 words
Ace Science Fiction MINIMUM 80,000 words.
Main stream novels are never shorter than 70,000 words and most are 100,000+

That depends on how long it takes a writer to complete the entire story. For instance, a novella can have a word count of between 17,500 and 40,000, a novelette can have a word count of between 7,500 and 17,500, and finally a novel can be 60,000 to over 100,000.
