HONESTLY they are always on assault. And it's not just with Bush. It's with every Republican president in the latter part of the 20th century to the present time. Even Reagan, who was liked by nearly EVERYONE, was subjected to much criticisms by the left. My simple question is why can't they ever praise a Republican president for doing a good job overall? Is that too much to ask?

Why don't Republicans engage in the same smear tactics as Democrats? Someone answer please.

The Republicans engage in much worse smear tactics than the Democrats ever have. They, in fact, have made a questionable art out of it. We all tend to just call it by it's nickname these days - "swiftboating." The Democrats will engage in it from time to time, but there's no question about which party has perfected the art of the smear and never shrinks from using it - and that's the Republicans.

Presidents always have criticism aimed at them, it's called dissent, and it's part of our history. Some Presidents are more deserving of it than others. Bush has made a horrific mess in Iraq, something that all but the most diehard right wing neocons can admit these days. If you don't think that's the case, that's your prerogative. But there are many more who disagree with you, and sometimes that's just the way it is. I don't think he's done a good job overall, I think he's been a very bad President, our worst in many decades. And I have a right to hold that opinion - no one should ever tell me they think I need to back off from the way I feel. That wouldn't be very American to tell someone they don't have a right to their opinion and the freedom to express it now would it?

"Why don't Republicans engage in thee same smear tactics as Democrats?" Are you kidding? Look at the assaults on Clinton while he was in office by conservative commentators and politicians alike. Granted most of it was deserved, but Clinto did leave office with a surplus in the budget that disappeared within the first two years of W's presidency.

The reason why Democrats attack every Republican President in the later part of the 20th Century (and the 21st Century as well) is simple. There hasn't been a good Republican President since Eisenhower. Nixon was great on foreign policy, but domestically he was shameful. Ford was inept and left a huge mess for Carter. The glorious Ronald Reagan, was well liked, but he was not on top of things like he should have been (Iran-Contra, "Ketchup is a vegetable" school lunches, and the attacks on Libya and Grenada). Bush senior lied to us ("No new taxes" and only about 100 points of light) and then hid his own screw-up by having a clown for his VP.

"My simple question is why can't they ever praise a Republican president for doing a good job overall? Is that too much to ask?"

Show me one Republican who did a good job since Eisenhower and maybe we'll praise him.

Republicans don't engage in smear tactics? Are you kidding? Bush went after his own party - John McCain when they were running against each other. He went after McCain's wife and kid - and it was all lies!

They crucified Clinton for a b lo w jo b, but Bush is supposed to be untouchable even though he is the most secretive president in recent history - even more so than Nixon????!!!

Maybe if the Republican party was being the Republican party instead of being led by the nose by the religious right-wing faction in this country, I'd give them a listen. The Republican party has been hijacked.

I'm none too happy with the Democrats at the moment either. I'm trying to figure out where their backbones went, but let's not paint this as a Democrat assault when the Republicans are just as guilty of smear tactics.

Well you say democrats are constantly on the attack, thats only because you've been lucky enough to have your party member as president for 2 terms.

Think back to Clinton, the criticism he received (and all democrats for that matter) over a sexual encounter(s) with a secretary was far worse than Bush totally mishandling the war leaving more troops dead than died in 9/11, so many innocent Iraqi deaths from a). collateral damage and b). the friendly new terrorists we've created. That is why I don't back off.

It's like you think no democrats own guns, and that we are totally anti-war 100% of the time. I want Osama Bin Laden as much as any republican, perhaps more so. I want HIM to pay for what he has done, not the innocent people of Iraq. I don't want to be lied to about faulty intelligence that could have saved our innocent citizens. I'm tired of hearing reports of a draft, there is a reason why recruitment is down its called disillusionment, which is why we the democrats won't back off, and neither should you!!

Why don't Republicans engage in smear tactics?? Have you ever listened to the conservative-biased media?
Fox "News" is nothing more than a Hitleresque propaganda machine for the Republican Party.
Ann Coulter is queen of the smear tactics, lies, distortions, innuendos, and fabrications.
Rush Limbaugh, of course, is at the top of the heap with his toxic poison which he spits forth daily for all his ditto heads to digest.
The Bush administration even has a "rally squad" and a "play book" on how to dispel protesters whenever Bush speaks in public!
Republicans wrote the book on 'dirty tricks' and 'smear tactics'. Remember how they violated Ed Muskie until it finally ruined his campaign? Remember Nixon's 'enemies list'? Remember the break-in at the Watergate Hotel? Remember Ronald Reagan's little scandal called the IranContra affair?? Remember the multi-million-dollar 'investigation of Bill Clinton's extra-marital affair with another consenting adult?? Remember Attorney General John Mitchell's illegal activities?? Remember all of the recent scandals in the Bush administration?? Remember the torture and sexual abuse of 'detainees' that was only discovered by an honorable soldier who posted photos on the Internet?? Remember.........ANY of this?? -RKO- 08/27/07

Republicans DON'T engage in the same smear tactics as Democrats? What planet do you live on??

Everyone attacks those that are from the opposing view. It is human nature. Unfortunately, no one realizes that if everyone put asside their differences of opinions and worked together, much more would get done than is right now.

But honestly - Republican's don't participate? I beg to differ. No one side of the political fence is innocent of anything. Everyone has their detractors. And if you don't think that Republicans smear others, what in the hell was the entire Clinton thing? You going to tell me that a man getting a b*ow j*b from a woman other than his wife was truly a matter of national security? And a man that wanted to save face wouldn't lie in the same position? Republicans fed that entire thing, and Kenneth Starr was nothing but a Republican puppet.

No one is innocent in politics.

Give me a break and stop whining. Republicans are just as bad as Democratic. When there is a democratic President Republican will be front and center with criticism. Rush Limbaugh ratings will go back up, unfortunately.

"Why don't Republicans engage in the same smear tactics as Democrats?" Are you blind? Ever since Bill Clinton was elected it has been nothing but attack from the Republicans. They brought partisan attacks to an entirely new level. Jimmy Carter got attacked really bad too. He wasn't our best President ever, but he was a good man who got no credit for the good things he did accomplish. As for Reagan, I kind of liked the old coot, but he was far from perfect either. He didn't get attacked near as bad as Clinton.

The same reason a republican can't praise a democrat president. Neither party cares about what's good for the American people anymore. Both just want more money in their pockets.

And if you don't think republicans engage in smear tactics, you are blindly one-sided.

We would be lying if we said they are doing a good job. They are not good at pretty much everything. They cannot handle "war" like republicans say they can. They always ruin the economy because they don't understand economics, they try putting their own belief system in when our constitution was set up so this couldn't happen.
They don't understand "freedom for all." They don't know what a true patriot is.
It is funny how republicans tout being "moral." They are the least moral of any group in the entire world.
