I was planning to get DSL because I disconnected my AOL(phew and it was hard) service. So I had my eyes on cable and then I looked at the price...a little too steep for me. So I did some research and so far I hve my eyes on Yahoo Basic DSL. The price seems good and it "sounds" faster than dial-up. But I am afraid it isn't that fast. I usually go on Myspace, Youtube, Aim and so and I don't know if this is the best internet for it. Also my mom isn't willing to pay for $20.00 for internet so no Pro for me. Also i wanted to know how long does it take to install the wireless router that you have to pay for and who will do it. Also on how much is the total for the wirelessrouter + the DSL. Basically I am trying to get some opinions from others personal experience. Thanks!

The price differance between DSL, and Cable is because your UPLOAD speeds on cable are nearly the same as your download speeds. With DSL, your upload speeds are usually much lower than your download speeds.

If I remember correctly, the basic DSL package from Yahoo / AT&T is 1.5mbps. This is MUCH faster than dial up.. Dial up on average is like 48kbps... DSL would be 1,500kbps (abouts).. So 30x faster, or more...
To put things in perspective... With dial up, you might be able to download a file from a web site at 8kbps - 20kbps (if you are lucky).. With DSL, if your not getting about 90kbps - 150kbps +, the site is overloaded..

There are various speeds of DSL available in accordance to how plenty funds you want to spend. normally a dial-up runs at 56000 bits according to 2d. the backside velocity DSL runs at one million bits according to 2d. this is approximately 20 circumstances swifter. whether the unquestionably acquire time of a information superhighway web site or digital mail isn't actual won or despatched 20 circumstances swifter, there are different factors which stop that. In actual existence it could be greater like 10 to fifteen circumstances swifter than dial-up. 2 effective helpful properties approximately DSL are: it does not tie up your telephone line, and greater advantageous than one computing device can use it on the comparable time. The down area is the fee. normally dial-up costs around $20 a month, and DSL would be greater like $50 a month, and as quickly as you employ DSL you is definitely no longer prepared to flow back to dial-up. So this suggests the greater advantageous $30 a month is everlasting.

I think AT&T/Yahoo's basic DSL is 384K, which is still much faster than dial-up. Not bad for $15.

Normally setting up a wireless router takes maybe 20 minutes, BUT....

The Speedstream DSL modems used by AT&T/Yahoo come pre-configured not to play nicely with 3rd-party routers (wired or wireless) It's easy to correct, but many people have headaches with the setup initially. Here's the fix:

Yahoo Basic DSL is good for regular internet surf and checking emails except some high definition pictures.
It only takes a couple of hours to install the hardwares and softwares. All the processes are pretty easy, so you can do all by yourself.
