Well, different people have different motives.
Some hate it because it's a lot of work with few short-term rewards.
Others hate it because, in the USA today, being intelligent and well-informed is despised--especially among certain cultural subgroups, including fundamentalist Christians, inner-city blacks (if you study, you're "acting white"), and members of the executive branch of the federal government.
Still others hate it because it involves the first real break from the comforts of childhood.
There are those who hate it because they have a high degree of self-loathing and they're going to poison anything they do just to hurt themselves.
Oh, then there are those who hate it because they just haven't discovered what to do with their lives, and they feel it's the college's fault that their misplaced and aimless.
Finally there are the colleges themselves, often making hatred a rational response to their blase attitude about student welfare. Recently there was the case of the university president and public safety director who both resigned after it was learned that they covered up a rape-murder of a woman in a dorm...that's an extreme case, there are regularly thousands of cases of professors abusing their authority over students, directors mis-directing services, students being shuffled off to the margins so that some auxiliary enterprise favored by administrators can hold prominence.
OK, can't think of any more just now--

There are a lot of different reasons. Some people just have a bad experience (an abusive teacher or bullying or something like that) which turns them off to the whole educational system. Some aren't very good at academic work, and most people don't enjoy things they can't do well. Some people find it very confining - these are often the same people who say that they could never work cooped up in an office. Some people are just lazy and don't want to work so hard; others look at the alternatives and feel that they are wasting time they could be doing something they prefer.

It starts when a kid is labelled by the teacher as a "problem child". When they progress through the grades, the previous teacher will notify their colleage to watch out for them, and so on throughout their schooling. This changes the way the teacher sees the child, and will not teach them well. Of course there are good teachers that will do their best to make the kid enjoy school, but all it takes is a few bad ones to ruin their perception of school. As they get older, they want to get out as soon as they legally can, either by going into a trade, unskilled labour or unemployment. But it starts and ends with the teacher, not the student.

A lot of people get ill when it comes to school. They get sick of it. It stems from laziness. Poor reading skills can do it also.
