Yes, it's called property taxes.
It's a certain percent of the value of the land you live on.
It is also another way they squeeze money from the working poor.
Once you own property, you shouldn't have to pay anything.

No. There is no head tax or poll tax in the US like Aus or GB.
If you are a land owner, you pay real estate taxes. If you live in a pad/apartment, the landlord pays the tax (but the cost pushed to the tenant through the monthly rent).

Property taxes are used to fund various community activities including schools, fire & police, hospitals, roads, parks, etc., where it is felt that the burden is based on the amount owned rather than the amount earned or spent. Different districts set the rate for their district. (City, County, Hospital.)
Sales taxes are added to non-necessities (medicine and food are excluded in Texas) and are used to fund the state and city governments where the money is spent. If I leave Dallas and shop in the big mall in Mesquite next door, my sales tax goes to Mesquite. Dallas sales tax includes paying for part of regional transportation (bus and train). Arlington sales tax pays in part for the new Billion dollar Cowboy football stadium.
We don't have an income tax in Texas, some states do.
There are separate state and federal taxes on gasoline for road repairs and building.
There is a tax on renting a car that pays for the city's cost of American Airlines athletic center while the owners of the teams get the $200,000,000 AA paid for naming rights.

Yes... In North Nmerica, property owners have to pay what's called Property Taxes...
The total varies from county to county / state to state, but the amount to be paid almost always depends on the property value, and the value of the improvements made to that property.

Yes, we have to pay property taxes, once yearly in my state. The amount is based on what the tax assessor values your property at. We pay taxes on everything, although we're not as heavily taxed as the UK.

home owners pay a property tax.. a school tax....a host of other taxes, and the town I live in makes some people pay a "View Tax" . basically, if you have a great view of countryside, you have to pay for it. I'm not kidding either.

Yes. in North Carolina....
tax for owning car, then tax for driving the car, then another tax to insure the car and then again once a year to inspect and keep driving the car and a fine if the car is not kept insured.
tax for buying a home, tax for living in the home, tax on income that pays for the home, tax (in some counties) for owning a pet at the home, WRITE-OFF (tax credit) for making repairs to the home, then another tax for selling the home.
sales tax on everything. slightly lower on food products.
it is safe to assume that about 80% of one's income goes to taxes in one form or another......
