oh yeah what fun try to reinstall your windows disk. sounds like you got hacked and you get to reformat your pc, takes a couple hrs to do this, then go online to your computer manifacturer and download the drivers needed (some sites have a program that will look for you and tell you what drivers you need like HP)then you`ll get about 2 hrs of windows updates (most of these require you to reboot your computer after each update so be patient) or you can just take it to the shop and have them do it

If you get an error regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll file, it might simply be the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive that is misconfigured
Do the following...
1. Boot from your Windows XP CD.
2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
(Typically this will be #1)
4. Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
5. Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
6. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

i can tell you that you probably received a virus that deleted system32, system32 is a program that windows needs to boot your computer and run properly, that where you get the /system32/hal.dll error. you will need to get a recover disc or reinstall your windows on your computer.

i warn you, recovering or reinstalling will cause you to lose all your data.

ibillica even though it seems you think your right, your wrong, a misconfigured hal.dll would not cause auto rebooting during the night as described, it would automatically shut down the computer and would not let it restart.

get the cd that came with your pc and do a system restore.follow prompts on the screen. you will lose any data you had saved on your pc. it will restore it to the way it was when you first brought it home. any programs or hardware you have added since then will have to be reinstalled. if you had a trial version of an antivirus program that came with your pc it will go back to that. so if you purchased a new antivirus subscription since then you will need to reinstall that too, & then do all the virus definition updates. it's a pain and will keep you busy for a while. but it should bring it back to a functional state again. after that you will probably want to find out what caused the meltdown in the first place. good luck to you!
