With a lunar eclipse, the moon passes into the shadow of the Earth. The sun is on the opposite site of the world. So if you can see the moon, the sun won't be in the sky. With a solar eclipse, the sun IS in the sky and so is the moon, right next to it. The moon gradually covers more and more of the sun until, at totality, the whole of the sun is behind the moon. The only lasts for a maximum of 3 minutes then the moon gradually moves away from the sun. Naturally it is dangerous to look at the sun directly. No one is ever recorded as having been blinded by looking at the sun. It is very bright, so the moment you try to look at it you involuntarily blink and close your eyes and turn away. It is an urban myth that it is dangerous to look at the sun. It is IMPOSSIBLE to look at the sun. And if you check you will see that worldwide there has never been a case of blindness caused by looking at the sun. A very different story to fireworks at New Year etc. The hospitals fill up with victims who have damaged their fingers, eyes, etc etc.

Only if you're operating heavy machinery.

Or standing in the middle of the street.

Ahem. Seriously, looking directly at a lunar eclipse is no more dangerous than looking at a full moon. Sunlight reflected off the moon, i.e. moonlight, is only about 1/450,000 times as bright as the Sun even during a full moon.

It is not dangerous to look at the lunar eclipse itself, but what is dangerous is looking at the SOLAR eclipse. you are looking at the Sun and the moon, looking at the moon could not hurt you but it is not advisable to look directly at the sun. That is your answer, it is not looking at the eclipse which is dangerous but looking directly at the Sun when it is not at full solar eclipse. Lunar eclipses does not hurt a bit.

it isn't dangerous to look directly at a lunar eclipse because it has no radiation comming from the sun. this radiation only comes during a partial solar eclipse. contrary to popular belief, it is safe to observe the total phase of a solar eclipse directly with the unaided eye, binoculars or a telescope, when the sun's photosphere is completely covered by the moon.

Have you ever looked at a full moon? It was okay, right? You didn't need special glasses, right? Same with the lunar eclipse because its the full moon going into Earth's shadow.

lunar eclipses are safe to watch with your eyes, it's solar (Sun) eclipses that are dangerous especially partial eclipse, though I wouldn't full around with a total eclipse either.

Nope, not at all; you're just looking at the moon. Now a solar eclipse, that's a different story... you should never look at that one without a filter.
