If --3y + 3^2 = --7
then --3y + 9 = --7
=> --3y = --16
=> y = 16/3

-3y+3 squared=7
-3y+9-9=-7-9
-3y=-16
-3y/-3=-16/-3
y=5 1/3

(-3y +3)^2 = -7
(-3y + 3)(-3y + 3) = -7
9y^2 -9y -9y +9 = -7
9y^2 -18y +9 = -7
9y^2 - 18y +9 + 7 = -7 +7 = 0
9y^2 -18y + 16 = 0

This is a quadratic in standard form.
ax^2 + bx + c = 0
where
a = 9
b= -18
c = 16

and where the solution is found with

y = [-b +/- SQRT( b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a
