So I took it to Auto Zone for a free diagnostic test, the error read P0402. There is a problem with the EGR valve. Is there a somewhat simple way to repair this, or is it something I need to take to my mechanic? I am not a hard core wrencher but am able to do minor engine work.

if you have the knowledge to fix it then by all means save some money however you still need to take it to have them turn the check engine light off. with the new computerized cars they are alot harder to fix than the older ones

P0402 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected

Replace the EGR valve, and reset the light.

egr flow excessive could indicate the valve is stuck open. If this is the case you will have a rough idle from excessive air in the intake. Remove the valve and, being careful not to damage the valve seat, try to clean it so it can operate. You can also try removing the vacuum hose that operates it and reconnectig it several times, with engine running, to see if the carbon or whatever will dislodge. A new valve is peobably $30 and up. The valve will be on your intake manifold and have a vacuum line to it.

This is a common problem. The OBD-II computer monitoring system on modern vehicles tracks EVERYTHING, including possible fuel evaporation from an incorrectly sealed gas filler cap. Your gas cap might be loose, incorrectly installed, missing, or defective. Try cleaning the filler neck with a clean rag, then reinstalling the cap. You might need to disconnect the negative battery cable for around 30 seconds to clear the service engine soon light.

You can try removing it and cleaning it, or replacing it.
but, that may not fix the problem, it is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve and your exhaust gases pass through it leaving carbon build up. the clog could be somerwhere else entirely, including the metal tube connected to it. if you take it off look to see how much build up there is, if not much just clean and oil. it may be that simple. if not you can always take it to a technician later but they will probably charge a diagnostic fee.

be careful. fords usually need a "DPFE" sensor and not the valve itself. the pdfe (ford # 9j460) is the egr pressure sensor. sold hundreds of dpfes and only like 3 actual egrs when i worked at ford.
but good luck anyway.

Disconnect battery positive for 30 sec with key out of ignition. reconnect then turn key on only . don't start the car till you see the SERVICE ENGINE SOON come on and turn off. if light stays on then you need to change EGR.

If you really want to try to replace the EGR yourself, you should buy a generic service manual ($20.00 +/-) from AutoZone.

Read the instructions to determine if this is something you really want to deal with.

Good luck.

hit the EGR with some WD-40, they are notorious for sticking shut or open on Fords.
