My 62 year-old Mother had a Uterine Fibroid Polyp & had it removed with no Hysterectomy & she is fine. In your Mom's case, the reason for the follow up smears mentioned is that the ASCUS or "atypical squamous cells changes of undetermined signifigance" showed up from the Pap. I wouldn't worry about that though, because swelling in the abdomen from fluid or an infection can cause this, which can all stem from the Polyp, it doesn't mean Cervical Cancer. They are suggesting follow up Pap smears, to see if the removal of the Polyp resolves this, which it most likely will.

Of course, all this depends on what your Mom wants. If Ishe is gung ho for a Hysterectomy then obviously that is the best choice for her. If she is hesitant to go with that option than I would advise her to follow the advised results remove Polyp & have the follow up Pap's. If she can't decide, get a 2nd opinion. Too many times, I think some Gynecologists think that the Hysterectomy is the cure for all women over 45. I think if she is at all hesitant, I would get a 2nd opinion. Hope I have helped you! Good luck!

An ASCUS pap smear result is considered to be mildly abnormal. This is the most common type of abnormal Pap smear. ASCUS stands for Atypical Cells of Undetermined Significance, and basically means there were mild cellular changes and the cause is unknown. Many times a slight infection or cervical inflammation may causes a Pap to come back as ASCUS. The bottom line is that there is no immediate cervical cancer risk in an ASCUS Pap smear. Uterine fibroids are recurrent, which is probably why your mother's gyn is suggesting a hysterectomy as remedy, rather than a polypectomy. A second opinion might be prudent, if your mother is not comfortable with the idea of a hyst. But, if she is confident of this doctor, then there is nothing, in and of itself, incorrect with the doctor's choice of treatment.

If the doctor recommends a hysterectomy she needs to go head and have it. If her pap smear was consistent with ASCUS that means she has atypia squamous cells of undetermined significance of her cervix. A lot of times that can lead to cervical cancer. She needs to go ahead and do it since she is 52. It's not going to get any better. She is ok now but may not be in the future. She can always get a second opinion but the pap smear results will more than likely stay the same and that can lead to trouble in the future.

strongly recommend a second opinion from a physician who is not affiliated with the first. neither the polyp or the pap smear are reason enough for a hysterectomy unless there are other problems that you are not aware of.

ASCUS - Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance or Atypical Squamous Cells of Uncertain Significance

The cytologist recommended polypectomy, but her doctor recommended a hysterectomy.

Yes, a hysterectomy would most definitely be in order for your mother.

It will be up to your mother if she wants her ovaries removed.

Good luck.
