We typically clear the dishes well, but need to use the dishwasher for the best wash.

Lately, I've been getting bits of food on my dishes and I have been clearing them off pretty well. I think the food bits haven't been draining at all. Is there a way to clear this at all?

Another place to make sure is clear is the air-gap: take the cap off and look inside both tubes (if visible...there are several configurations of air-gaps, but most of the newer ones have 2 tubes that are open/visible) to make sure nothing is blocking them. Also, look under your sink at the black discharge hose from the air-gap to the dispoze-all: it should be round, not kinked or bent and preferably not 'bellying down.' Always run the dispoze-all after the d/w has finished: food in the d/w discharge water winds up in the dispoze-all.

I had that same problem and found out it that it was because there was hard water mineral buildup in the filter of my dishwasher. My dishwasher repairman told me about Lemi Shine (WalMart, Target and most grocery stores have it - it is there with the other dishwasher additives) and it is wonderful!
Here are the instructions from their website:
Fill both detergent receptacles with Lemi Shine. Turn the dishwasher on and let it fill with water. Once it has filled, turn the dishwasher off and let it sit overnight. The next morning the dishwasher can be turned back on so that it can go through the cycles and drain. Sometimes there is so much mineral deposit in the dishwasher that an initial regular cycle cannot get all of it and some of that deposit that has been broken down becomes redeposited on the dishes. There are deposits that are visible and some that are not (in the filter and the spray arms).

With this application, the mineral deposits are exposed to Lemi Shine for a longer period of time so Lemi Shine has time to break it all down. After this application, Lemi Shine can be used as directed on the bottle from that time forward.

Turn power off at breaker box. Remove lower tray. Find the plastic strainer in the rear...this will need to be removed with either a screwdriver or a 1/4 inch nut driver
( This is "Typical" )
Pull out diverter, put hand in hole VERY SLOWLY to avoid broken glass, and remove any debris...Reassemble.
Good Luck
BTW, Run afull cycle empty, this will help wash out anything you missed

Call your landlord and have him deal with it. If you break it, you buy it.
