I have an 1987 (I think) 88 SPL and would like to know if it is possible to increase the hp to 115. I noticed that the stroke and displacement were the same for both engines. If it is possible, how would it be accomplished, and is it recommended. Thank you.

First answer may be correct. When you look at a carb, see the big hole the air come through. It is a specific Diameter. Theoretically changing the Diameter and possibly the Fuel Jet may do this (Which translates to new carbs). Other than that, I will guess you remove the Power Head (Engine) and replace with a 115.
You may come out cheaper selling yours, if it runs, and buying what you want. It always good to look at all your options.

On lots of OMC and Mercury outboards it is just a matter of changing the carbs.
On your particular one, I am not sure.

Can you lend me 100 bucks but only give me 50? That way you still owe me 50 and I owe you 50 so then we are even.

the intake manifold ports are larger, the carb. throats are larger, the main jets are larger. you could do it if money wasn't an object but it's a lot of work and trouble.
