Hopefully loghog comes back on to tell us what it looked like.

Introduce your son to astronomy and science classes in school. Hoaxes like this one come up often and are sure to increase as more disinformation comes from the 2012 kooks. It will help him to seperate fact from fiction.

There is no "mars sighting" tonight. This is a hoax that comes back every year since 2003.

On Aug. 27, 2003, Mars was the closest it ever was to Earth. One astronomer reported that if you look at Mars through a 75x telescope, it would look as big as the Moon does to the naked eye.

One journalist reported this but forgot to include the annoying part about the telescope.

Every year after that, someone changes the year and posts the hoax about "Mars being as big as the Moon".

It cannot be. Never.

Ever.

However, there is an eclipse of the Moon. somewhere around 5 a.m. tomorrow morning (Aug. 28) along the East coast of USA.

Tonight is nothing special for Mars.

Mars is visible in the sky for more than half the year - its only not visible when its orbit makes it appear to be close to or behind the sun (from our perspective).
Mars is one of the planets known and observed by the ancient Greeks and Romans, so its visible to the naked eye to us (if we bother to look up at night).

Right now, Mars rises in the east around local midnight - its a bright reddish star that doesn't twinkle.
By December it will be its brightest (it will be at opposition) and will be visible a few hours after sunset for most of the night (just like Jupiter is right now and has been for a few months).

If you're talking about the chain letter that says Mars will be roughly the size of the moon, it is a hoax. Sorry :( The same thing happened a couple years ago and it wasn't true.
