I love bettas too. They are such beautiful and intelligent fish. I have one at home that lives in a 10 gallon tank with my juvenile guppy fry and one at work in a 2.5 gallon tank with an apple snail. They are both males and very pretty, although they each have very different personalities.
I have spoiled the one at home because he is so friendly and outgoing. He has blue and red fins with a cellophane border on the edge of his tail. I started hand feeding him and now he will only eat food from my finger and won't eat the fish food I drop into the tank anymore. He will let the guppy fry eat the food in the water and just wait until I put food onto my finger for him to jump up and grab.
The fish at work is a big coward, though. He is a veil tail with beautiful azure blue flowing fins and any time anything comes too close to his tank he hides in the plants. Some fighting fish he is! It's a good thing he won't ever have to fight anyone.

I have seen some great Betas for sale where I live; haf-moon, plakat etc. Itreally is amazing how many colours and varieties they come in! Take a look at the ones they sell at this aquarium store I go to!

My sister also has some (in separate living quarters, of course!) They all sit and watch the tv together when she gets in from work!

I just bought my first one last week! I felt like I was rescuing him from Petco. I never thought I could like a fish so much but he is so expressive and always looks at me with puppy dog eyes. He's great. I thought I wanted a blue one but when I saw him I had to pick him (he's red with bluish scales). My friend and I stood in front of all the bettas and called out names to see which one looked :) . I think I'm already hooked, I already want to get another one and put him in another tank side by side. I really love the way that bred crowntails look but the ones at petco always seem like they need more TLC...

veil tails. VTs for short, are the longest tail shape, they are also the most common, VTs are signature for their curved tail rays which makes it the longest, while most"upper pros" consider VTs to be a waste, they make a fine pet.
I have owned bettas for the last 13 years, been breeding them ever since. At one point in my career i had around 500 male bettas and alittle less amount of females.
Right now i down sized as im currently spending alot of time breaking into the SW market, but i do have some plakats, half moons, and a few CTs, and VTs around.
It is addicting, but remember never to loose your passion that you have now. Never get lazy and dont do a water change, keep your passion and keep up with the WCs.

I too own and love bettas. I fell in love with bettas just over 30 years ago and have kept and bred them ever since. If I had to pick an all time favorite over the years it would be steel blue half moon bettas.

Mine is a great addition to my community tank - he's approaching 3 1/2 years old and he's a very active and curious little guy with plenty of character. One's enough for me though - only so many tanks I can have and after seeing what he does in a full tank I could never keep one in little container.

MINE IS ROYAL BLUE , He loves William Tricker gold fish food! 1-800-524-3492..$ i.70 a jar. They raise these fish and can help you choose another one...Seperate bowls only!!!!!! Sounds like you have a female, the males are beautiful. Let me know how you make out! Put a mirror beside each bowl,,just for a short time, The fisshys will exercise with the mirror, Don't leave the mirror to long, the fish will get exausted and die! NEVER put males together, they fight to the death.

You cannot keep two male betas in the same tank and the males are the ones with the long flowing tails. Male betas fight to the death anytime they meet.
You CAN keep a male and a female in the tank, but if you have a male, then you need to get at least 2 or 3 females for him because the male betas are so aggressive, they terrorize a single female too much and she dies early.
Incidentally, female betas seem to live longer than males if you take good care of them. Just remember to keep a baby net or grass in the tank if you get both male and female betas because the parents will eat them if you don't.
