I am 37 weeks pregnant...I registered for a high chair, and received one at my shower. However, I am starting to wonder how truely necessary/useful a high chair is. I know i wont get any use out of it for a good while...but I have heard of people using bouncy chairs (Which I have) instead. What is your take, is a high chair a waste of money, or an essential item for baby?

It is essential...A bouncy chair will work in the beginning but when the baby gets a few months older it will be impossible and messy. My son is nine months old and he likes to try to feed himself so the high chair works great. I also bought a portable high chair from target for about $20 and I would have only bought this one if I had bought it first. It hooks right to the kitchen table so the baby can sit with you.

As a father of four and having my time feeding the little ones I might know a thing or two about what has worked. My oldest are now approaching thier tweens but I have a 2-year old now and feeding him is a challenge, thank God for our high chair. A high chair comes in handy for having a "together" moment with the family. The highcair is made to be "hosed off" where as the bouncy seat has layers of fabric that may trap stains or smells. It also cannot be used after a certain age or weight (maybe after baby starts trying to walk around 6-8 mos). A high chair can be used until the chid is about 2-4 depending on the child and then they might sit at the table or a special kid sized table and chair set (from walmart for $30). It helps when feeding the baby to have them at your eye level in the high chair but should only be used when they can sit comfortablly (6-8 mos) unsupported which is usually the time you start introducing cereal and some solid foods slowly. If you love having family dinners together and they are mature enough at about 2-3 to sit at the table and your high chair is sized to complement your table you can pull them a spot at the table to eat with everyone. Thats a plus. A bouncy seat has it's place in entertainment but can be used for about 3-4 months and a high chair can be used for 2-3 years.

A high chair will definitely get it's use when the baby is older. You can use the bouncy chair earlier on but keep ahold of the highchair because you will need it. Not only is the highchair for feeding it is also good to set the child in and pull up beside you when you are doing dishes. Definitely not a waste of money and is an essential item for later on.

I think a high chair is a big must but not neccesarily for a baby. When both my boys were 6 months and younger they ate in the bouncy chair. When things start getting messy it just seems easier in the high chair. There are different types like spacesavers that fit in a chair at the table and can still recline to feed baby. Once they start feeding themselves a high chair is very convenient and I feel a must!!

I've never used a high chair with my 3-year-old. When he could sit up, I bought him a booster seat that straps into a regular kitchen chair, and we've both loved it. It's totally portable, super easy to clean, cost about a third what it would have cost to buy a high chair, and it doesn't take up any extra space in the kitchen.

Our seat, which still looks practically new after nearly 3 years of 5-times-a-day feeding, is the Fisher Price Healthy Care Booster.

For the first few months the bouncy seat is okay, but the high chair is essential when they start feeding themselves finger foods etc. It also saves your back so you don't have to lean way over with the bouncy seat. It is really wise to get a mat to put under the high chair when they start feeding themselves also.

well the problem with using a bouncy chair is that once the baby can sit completely upright they arent really safe as they will tip over forwards...also there is a weight limit of like 20 lbs on them. also they dont have a tray so when the baby is old enough for finger foods and stuff theres no place to offer foods for self feeding, a highchair will be used well into toddlerhood depending on the size of your child (my kids were all around 2 when they moved out of the high chair) for my baby i bought one of the ones thats just the seat and tray that sits on a regular chair though due to lack of space.

We just got one tody for our son. He is 4 months old and has been eating in a bouncy chair sitting on top of the kitchen table for two months now. I am going to see if he likes it. We have a small house though and I hate that it will take up so much space. It was a deal though, $15, you can't beat that.

A intense chair grow to be very clever till Jack grow to be approximately 2 years old. I even have considered those chairs that hook to the table, yet under no circumstances used one ( I did like the belief however). We had a transportable intense chair (one that straps onto a chair) and that labored for vacationing between relations visits on vacations. average, you will get super use from the intense chair you won...yet relatively won't use it till she is approximately 6-8 months old. For now, your bouncy chair will paintings till she outgrows it by way of the time she reaches 6-8 months.

we didnt use one until he was about 11 mths old.
it is a godsend, i wish we had one earlier.
i was so used to holding him and feeding him, i thought i would never need one. but now that he is running around everywhere (he's 1) when i need to sweep the floor or vacuum i can put him in it give him finger foods and he will eat for 10 minutes while i do what i need to do.
every morning he goes straight to the chair (thats how he tells me he is hungry) and also, they can make a mess or whatever in it to.

we used the bouncy to feed him until around 7-8 mths.
but now that he wont sit still and wants to eat and run, we have to put him in the high chair...

so to answer your question, yes the are defiantly worth the $$$$
