I have a 1998 Mazda 4 Cylinder engine. It is losing oil pressure, so instead of buying a new car, I would like to replace the engine. So my question to you is how much would a used low mileage Mazda 626 engine be?? Anyone know a good site or place close to Chicago IL to get them at?

www.Car-part.com. Better than ebay. They have a network of recyclers in every state and are pretty damn good as far as used engines go (bought 10 engines various makes and models for my customers). Of course use common sense and find a balance between price and mileage. Don't go after the cheapest engine but don't pay an arm and a leg either. You may even get lucky and find a recycler with engines that have only highway miles on them and would be in way better shape than anything you could find in Chicago (plus the freight). Any mechanic should be able to give a quick leakdown test and a visual inspection for oil sludge before accepting the engine. Figure realistically $450 - $1000 plus shipping. Some recyclers offer warranties on the engines and would even pay for labor in the event of engine failure. 15 - 25 labor time units @ $60 per unit = $900 - $1500 to install plus tax and small things like hose clamps, oil, coolant, etc. Good idea to change the radiator $160 at autozone oem style - no use in replacing the engine and using the same crusty radiator (unless previously replaced).

Check ebay and make sure it has a compression test done on it, most good resellers will tell you the compression of each cyclinder. These engine run from $400-$1000, search for a vendor in your zipcode. You may even want to go with a V6, just make sure it will work with your transmission. I hope you know someone or can do the engine replacement yourself, that will likely be another $1200-$1800 in labor by a shop. You can also check at the local salvage yards or do a search online if ebay isn't your thing.

A used JDM engine will probably run you less than $1500 with R&R. check cnsmotors.com and many others. CNS is here in So. Cal, but it will give you a good idea of what a used JDM engine for your car will cost from most places.

Are you absolutely sure it needs replacing? Most (non race or rare) engines are in the 1.5-4K dollar range, and thats not including install price.
