I live in San Jose, CA and I want to make a slipcover for my sofa. My problem is that I don't own a sewing machine and in an attempt to save money on buying a slipcover I want to make it myself. I was wondering if there is a place to rent one. I'm worried that if I get a seamstress to do it for me I won't really be saving any money. Any suggestions?

Go on Freecycle for your local area and post a wanted ad. You never know, someone may have one that they haven't used for a while and be willing to let you have it.

Call some of the sewing machine stores and see if they'll rent, or if they've got a refurbished machine they'll sell you reasonably.

Also ask around... it's amazing how many sewing machines live in closets for years and years and years... Be sure to clean and oil such a machine before using it.

Try asking around and see if anybody you know has one; maybe you could borrow it? Also, sometimes they turn up at garage sales and flea markets for just a few dollars.
