It really depends what kind of environment the student would succeed in the most.
But I think private schools can be too selective or expensive. Most private schools focus on academics so I feel like they can lack orchestras and bands or art classes. In a public school, to feed to the "public" or general need, they offer all these classes. The best part about it though, is that there isn't just a one man orchestra, but it can be compiled to a 200+ symphony orchestra because of the sheer size of the public school. (some public schools though, are not as lucky to have AP courses and extra curriculars and struggle with teaching the academics. then I guess private school would be better.)
I go to a very fortunate public school where the academics are rigorous and the creative arts (especially the music) are supportive, and being able to mingle with all the different people make the school community exciting. I personally would not like to go to a private school because they may have so much pride in their "tradition" that they box the kids in and forget to support their students needs and differences.

Well my experiences in both private and public is definitely going to be different from others but I can still say public school is better.
As usual, I'm going to say that private school is good in its own ways because of things such as the uniform which meant I had one less thing to think about every morning when I'm rushing to get on time. With a uniform, I wasn't thinking about what I needed to match with my pant or with my shirts and whatnot...that was for the weekend. But honestly, that's where the benefits of private school ends for me.
Public school is good for so many other reasons. In my private school, they wouldnt let us off the grounds for lunch so we had to wait so long to get our school to prepare it for us. Then there was the rules that they put on us and used the excuse that our parents agreed with them for everything.
Another benefit for being in public school is that I don't have to pay thousands to get an education. As long as you're paying attention in class, you'll still be the same student that you can be in a private school and even get better marks that you would never get in the private system.
In my private school, there was a lot of sucking up going on and the teachers would always play favourites and the problem was that I couldn't change my teacher no matter what I did. In the public schools, you can easily just book an appointment with a guidance councillor and get a different teacher that's giving the same course.
Altogether, the public school has a lot more freedom and as long as you have your head on your shoulders, I'm sure you won't get influenced by the wrong people and you can do what you want as long as its within the moral boundaries that any school has.

I see advantages and disadvantages to both: Public school has a little more diversity as far as the student population goes. You are getting more than just the people who can afford a private school. And that also leads to the price difference. Public school is definitely cheaper! If you can afford it Private schools supposedly have better teachers! I went to a public school and my child is attending a public school. I feel that he is receiving a Great education!

well.....
they both have sometimes equal goodies...
but public schools introduce more of a variety of people that a kid could learn how to deal with, while private school only introduces other rich kids(I guess)....
But I don't like public school or private school
Public school- It seems that you automatically get placed in a group and are labeled
Private school- I have never been in a private school so I can't help you there....
Right now I am in 11th grade and I just can't wait until I can leave all of those assholes behind...
I have been automatically placed as an outsider or a loner, these people take on look at me and give me space to walk in the hallways(Its not like I'm one of those super fat girls....) I just don't get them and I don't want to. I'm sure they do that type of thing in a private school but You pay for it.....

I go to public school, but I'd rather attend a private school because the teachers have more time to tend to every student, and private school kids are usually more mannerable, learn more, and get the better jobs in the end.

Both have their pros and cons....my children and I have 6 have gone through and are going through the public school system.
We could afford the private sector if we chose but there isn't enough programs that are available in the private schools. My middle son is special needs and he would not be given the privagles in a private setting that he is given in the public one. At first I was against putting him in public school but now that I see the advantages and opportunities that he is given I say yepper pepper to public school....also please note I live in a small community...now lets say if I lived in a very crowded place like LA no I would not have my children in public school because of the violence.

I've always went to private and think that I would prefer the same for my kids. M.O.F.my friend and I just had a debate over the same question a few weeks ago. It just looks as though some of the P.S. kids here in N.Y. are sooooo out of control, especially after school; and really disrespectful and rude to each other. Catholic school kids on the other hand i was told are worse, but at least I don't see them acting so...uncouth in public.

Private b/c even though it costs you money, the education your child receives is far more greater than the education they have to offer in Public Schools. That means they'll be smarter and have a better chance of getting into colleges than students who go to Public Schools.

Public. I say that because it's alot less expensive and I believe that you'll have just as many opportunities at one school as you would the other anyway as long as you work hard to keep your grades and achieve your goals. Also, I believe at most private schools they have a dress code that is much more strict than public schools. I believe children should have the right to express themselves in what they wear as long as it isn't offensive to other students or faculty.

well, i would say it's all preference. if you're more into book smarts, go to private schools. you'll learn much more in a private school, and you will be more disciplined here.
if you're into street smarts, go to public schools. i don't mean you won't learn anything in public school, but it's more of a social gathering at public schools. it's not taken as seriously because the teachers are underpaid. but you learn a lot about adaptation, people skills, business sense, having more fun, etc.
if you're into learning about the bible, into security and teachers taking care of you, then by all means pay the extra amount for a good education. if you will settle with an overall, cheaper route out, go public. anywhere you go, anything you do, is what you make of it. =)
oh to answer your question, i would prefer sending my child to a private school because i would want him/her to learn more. i believe in work hard play hard. public is kinda the in between. i went public by no choice of mine.
