Let the unknown be x
add all..

650+x

Mean is (650+x)/8 = 90 (as specified)

650+x = 90*8
x = 720 - 650
x = 70

The missing number is 70

The arithmetic mean is the sum of the values divided by the number of values.

Let
x = missing score

(90 + 85 + x + 95 + 90 + 100 + 90 + 100)/8 = 90
90 + 85 + x + 95 + 90 + 100 + 90 + 100 = 8*90 = 720
650 + x = 720
x = 70

First get rid of the 90's; they don't do anything but add clutter. If I assemble a list of the rest, along with their difference from the mean, I get:

85, -5
95, +5
100, +10
100, +10

With the missing value included, those differences from mean should all add up to zero. The total difference is -5+5+10+10 = 20. So we have to have a value that is 20 below the mean to cancel it out.

90-20 = 70.

So verify by calculating the mean: (90+85+70+95+90+100+90+100)/8 = 720/8 = 90. Correct.

what you would do is put all of the scores added

90+85+95+90+100+90+100+x=650+x

(650+x) / (8)=90

now solve for x
