One place you can buy it is online at the Vermont Country Store. This is a catalog company that sells a lot of old-fashioned but good stuff.

Not me. I watched my mother use it everytime she washed her clothes. I remember one of the stationery tubs held the blueing, and another held the plain water for the final rinse. It was a long process and she used her wringer washer to do her clothes. I used bleach from the first time I did my laundry on my own. Laundry was hard enough to do with all of that lugging wet laundry to the dryer at the laundramat, and then having to sort and fold everything before putting it into the basket to take home. I remember that the brand of blueing, was, "Mrs Wrights", which was our family name. And it always got our white clothes a very brill- iant white. My mother also preferred to hang her things outside on a clothesline. She liked the stiffness of her sheets, though not her towells. So eventually, she was won over by the electric dryer, when she saw how soft her towells came out, rather than off the clothesline.

Whitening Agents -
You can use any detergent which contains Optical brighteners that fluoresce in the blue wavelength (one example is Tinopal CBS-X from Ciba Specialty Chemicals).

All laundry detergents do contain brightening agents. Therefore there is no need to add bluing agents to the wash.

You should be able to find it in the laundry section of your grocery store. I have heard that there are several grocery stores not selling it anymore. However, you can order it from Mrs. Stewarts http://www.mrsstewart.com/
