Sometimes I look at books I have heard about, either through this section of Answers, or those that were recommended to me by a friend. Sometimes I look up an author I like to see if they have come out with anything new. But mostly I follow this little routine.
1. Go to a library
2. browse the titles
3. wait for something to jump out at me, either the title itself, the font, or the book cover. Anything that looks new or different. I visit the library fairly often, and in some small libraries, I have actually exhausted the sections I browse of fresh reading material.
4. Pick the book off the shelf, look at the cover (you shouldn't judge books by the covers, but the picture should tell you what genre it is)
5. Either set it on my large stack of books or put it back. Then check out.
Now to pick from the stack I have, I ask myself "What do I feel like reading?" Then I pick up a book at random, and open it.

I will talk to my family and friends to see what they are reading and what they suggest. I also have some favorite authors that I look for, and if they have a new book I will just buy it. The NYT book insert on Sunday is also a great place to get info on books. When browsing at the Book Store, a phrase my husband has come to dread, I will read the back cover and the first few pages. I learned a long time ago to "never judge a book by it's cover". I used to pick out books just because of the cover and have been sadly disappointed. I also read the reviews in the book, but I don't buy the book just because of those, as sometimes I think they are misleading. If I don't like the book by the second chapter, I will stop reading it. Too much to read, to waste my time on something I don't like. This is why I love the Library so much, it is a great place to discover new authors.... risk free.

I am a "Thriller" book fanatic and have read a huge percentage thats out there, so here are some excellent choices (I was going to say "page turner" until I heard the joke "why do people say this book is a real page turner--I know how books work!) Jeffery Deaver, Dennis Lehane, David Morrell and Lee Child, in my opinion they are the best thriller writers in the business!! I am a avid reader in this genre and have read Coben, King, Koontz, F. Paul Wilson, Connelly, and many others but none can touch these authors I've listed! The Deaver book I've just finished reading now is "The Sleeping Doll"--a brand new release and has literally keeped me up at nights!! I'm quite sure you'll love his other thrillers as well, such as "The Bone Collector", "A Maiden's Grave", "The Coffin Dancer", "Praying For Rain", "Cold Moon", "The Twelveth Card", "The Vanished Man", "Devil's Tear Drop" et el. For Lehane, start with "A Drink Before War" (don't let the title fool you) then "Darkness Take My Hand", "Sacred", "Gone, Baby Gone", "Prayers For Rain", "Shutter Island" and "Mystic River." For Lee Child, you can start with his first and move forward, but it's Ok if you don't. Some personal favs are: "One Shot", "Trip Wire", "Hard Luck and Trouble"--a new release, "The Persuader"-my personal fav, "The Hard Way", but they are all page turners! Also, last but definately not least is David Morrell. All his books are good, but I especially enjoy his last two releases "Creepers" and "Scavenger" which are guaranteed page-turners. Just finished my first Ed Mcbain book "Fiddlers" and it was both engaging and hilarious! Hope this helps, enjoy, Greg

Browsing the library coupled with recommendations. Some I even got in here. Then once I find one good book by an author, I burrow into the rest of his books, till I hit a couple of losers.
Oddly enough, I've returned from the library feeling completely manipulated by book blurbs. Apparently, you just need to call someone the "new Heinlein" and I'll give em a go. Four books, all written by new Heinleins one week.

If it is by an author I know I will probably read it anyway. If it sound interesting on the back of the book I will read it. If it is recommended by some one I know who likes the same types of reading material as I do, I will probably read it. I hope this answers your question. If you have any more like regarding what I like to read, just email me and ask. Have a great day and evening.

I don't know about anyone else, but I start by asking myself what genre would satisfy my mood at the moment. From there I either go through my list of books to narrow it down by author or I narrow it down by intriguing titles and their corresponding descriptions in a book store. Then I begin to read (this is actually part of the process), and I'll know within a few pages whether or not I feel like reading that particular book at this particular moment!

It could be the Author.
It could be the Title.
It could be the Cover.
Sometimes I take a chance and get rewarded. Like books written by Tami Hoag. I picked one up and really liked her writing.
Sometimes you get hosed. I don't diss anybody in public. When I do I donate them to my local Library.

I look for those few buzz words that always grab me.
Anything to do with: historical fiction..that sounds unique, ditto time travel..if the back cover grabs me, antiques, spy vs. spy, international intrige, etc. Matthew Reilly always. And a great mystery...my favorite is Jeffery Deaver. When I want to laugh,,,Carl Hiaasen. Bored to death with Evanovich...same old-same old.
