I am a divorced mother of a 6 year old that I was able to have through invitro. I could never get pregnant w/in 10 years of unprotective sex with my ex. I have been with someone who is my fiance for 2 years and got pregnant. I work for an employer who does not offer insurance but the self insurance I do have, maternity benefits was just an option. An infertile person age 35 does not even think of buying maternity insurance yet use birth control! C'mon, miracales happen but when 2 fertility doctors tell you that your tubes are scarred and your eggs are not quality to be fertilized on their own, maternity insurance is a universe away...i am 20 weeks and have been paying out of my ass for the appts. I don't qualify for medicaid because I make way too much. I've even contemplated cutting my hours just to get medicaid but I'm just not sure. My fiance as well works for a small family based business that he buys his own insurance as well. Am I just SOL w/a $10-15k bill?

When I was pregnant with my son I was self insured and the insurance did not cover maternity but I found a plan from Regence Blue Shield that I switched my coverage to (I was three months pregnant). It not only covered maternity but it did not consider it a pre-existing condition so the coverage was immediate. It might be worth speaking with an insurance broker to see what your options are. Good Luck!

And don't despair, even if you cannot find coverage there are options available. I know some hospitals give a discount for self pay and most will set up payment plans.

We did a maternity clinic located at a teaching hospital near us. It costs $2500 and that includes all prenatal appointments, labor and deliver (including an epidural), and 2 days of recovery for me and the baby. If I need a c-section, it will cost an additional $400.

There are a few requirements, the main one being that the household income cannot be above $55,000. I'm not sure if you exceed that income, but it does vary a bit from hospital to hopsital. The only downside is that the residents are the ones that see me, and while they are all very competent, there is a lack of consistent care and follow through that a single doctor would give you. But to save $12,000, I'm OK with that.

If you think you might qualify, call around some of the major hopsitals in the nearest large city. Almost every major city has at least 2-3 of these types of programs, and someone will be able to help you find one.

First of all, you can't cut your hours to get Medicaid. They'll look at your past paystubs and see that you were making much more. And if you don't have insurance for maternity, then, yes, you are just kind of out of luck. The only option I can think of is sometimes the hospitals will let you apply and prove that you have no coverage and they will take a pecentage off your bill using a goodwill fund of some sort. That's what ours did.

We make very little, but a little too much to quality for medicaid and both of our kids cost us 8-10 thousand dollars.

Ouch!

$15,000 just to have a BABY?!?!?!?!?!?

It's days like this that I'm GLAD to be a Canadian - paying 5-10% more on my income tax in exchange for FREE health care is MORE than a fair trade ;);););)
