Yes, you can buy a replacement 'kit' (not 'hit'). But I'd recommend buying a Fluidmaster 400 Fill Valve, about $9 at most hardware stores/home centers; it's a completely different-looking (and functioning) fill valve than what you have now...modern, etc. It's not rocket science to change out the old ball-and-rod assembly (which are basically cr*p) for something that's easier to install, adjust and maintain. Directions on the box are clear, but the help of someone who's done it before would be good. No need to over-tighten the new components or you'll crack the tank. you can also visit www.doityourself.com

You can just clip off the bottom part of a wire coat hanger and use it for the float arm. (This is for the old style that has a long rod and a big ball float on the end.)

go to the hardware store and get either a new rod and replace the old one or replace the entire mechanism with new, this should only take a few minnutes and be cost negligible, under $10 for everything

I'd say, remove the rod, go out and buy a mig-welder and weld the rod back together, reassemble your toilet, test it.

It'll never be the same. Save yourself the grief at the wrong times, and just buy a new one!

Buy a new float with rod.
Patching won't work.

If it snapped in half you gotta get a new one. You can rig it up with paperclips and rubberbands if you try. I used paperclips on the chain when it kept coming loose.
