They only come out during feeding time. How do I fix this?

Well, i have plenty of hiding places for them but they are always scury to the back of the tank when I go closer. But, before summer, I left to go to the philippines for 6 weeks and there was an automatic feeder and automatic lights. Do you think not having any one around scared them and they got used to that. I just got back

They probably have been there for 5 months now

I surely didn't change anything

Only my male cherry barb goes out and then hides. how could I fix this?

The best way to fix it is to increase the size of their school. They do this because they do not feel safe with only two of each species. Either get rid of them and get a non-schooling species, increase the size of the schools, or deal with scared, unhealthy fish. Email me if I can help in any way.

The first email was no problem at all.

How long have they been in the tank? It's common for newer fish to hide until they're comfortable.

What's your water quality like? Ammonia and nitrites should be 0 ppm, and nitrates under 20 ppm. Anything other then those readings could be stressing them.

Try turning the light off for awhile, and see if they're more active. If they are, may want to switch out the light, it might be too bright or bothering them.

Is there any aggressive fish in the tank? A lot of times fish will hide like that when they're being bullied by other fish.

Wow, I'm not sure how your tank is set up, but do you have enough hiding places? Do you have rocks or something in the front that allows them to hide in it? If you want more information you have to describe it better

I would say it's very likely they got used to having nobody around, and you should just have some patience and let them get used to having you around again. Once they see you as a non-threat and a provider of food, they'll come around.
