Like he says-the US was just really coming into its own as a world power at the time. Acting as a honest broker in the interests of peace made Roosevelt and the USA a "player" on the world stage. Neither Russia nor Japan really wanted the war to drag on. The Russian navy had been humiliated, and the Japanese army was getting tired. So both sides welcomed having a way out. It was a win/win/win situation.

Roosevelt was a very ambitious and energetic man. He wished to promote the United States and mediating a very publicized conflict was the way to do it.
