lol, a more COMMON position is to place the monitor at the end of the table, the keyboard directly infront of you (a little to the right so you can type easier) or at a slant towards your dominant arm. The mouse should be right next to the keyboard (a little closer to yourself though.)

I would put the monitor, keyboard and mouse on the desk. The other way around will only cause problems.
Ideally, the top of the monitor should be at eye level, or a little below. the keyboard should be at the same height as your elbows, or slightly above, with a good wrist rest in front of it.
The mouse should be at the same level, with enough space around it that you can move it freely.
Personally I think all mice should be on the left side, so when I come to fix someone's system I do not have to pretend to be riught handed, but that is optional.

If you sit up straight in your chair, the monitor should be set up right in front of you but back far enough that your not straining your eyes, set it at the height that your eye level is straight ahead to the center of your monitor.
Your keyboard should be centered directly in front of you with your mouse to one side or the other of the keyboard depending on if your right or left handed.
You should always sit straight up in the chair with both feet flat on the ground so you have good posture, otherwise after a while you will hurt your back &/or shoulder.

Personal preference.
I'm right-handed and have been using computers for about seven years now. I have the other items atop my desk. My monitor is behind my keyboard, while my keyboard is directly in front of me. My mouse is on the right-side of my keyboard.
Whatever makes you comfy.
