This is a very broad question, and before answering, I must state that street racing is stupid, and only endangers the racers lives and the lives of others. Moving on, the two ways to produce power are with forced induction (turbo or superchargers), or with natural aspiration. There is enough information on these methods to fill thousands of pages, but I will give a brief overview. Forced induction involves cramming air into the engine so that along with more fuel, a bigger explosion is produced, and more power is made. Words to goolge: supercharger, turbocharger, intercooler, boost. Natural aspiration is more of an art, though it often does not result in as much power. With natural aspiration, all aspects of the combustion process are optimized, and this often costs more money per horsepower as power levels rise. Words to google: port polishing, compression ratio. Keep in mind that both methods use many of the same parts, such as freer flowing exhausts, smoother and shorter intakes, and camshaft work. Nitrous can be used with both methods, though it has a greater effect with natural aspiration. As well as power, the drivetrain and tires must be upgraded to match, often involving such things as a grippier clutch, thicker axles, a Limited Slip Differential, and wider, softer tires. Real racers that do things such as autocross and track sessions also usually need to do suspension upgrades, such as changing dampeners, springs, and roll bars, as well as brakes that will dissipate heat better. Of course, one of the most important things to do doesn't involve putting things on, but taking things off. Weight reduction will have a positive impact on every area of performance. Hope this helps some, and that you never decide to street race. If you need to go fast, check out HPDE from NASA (the car one) or Solo Autocross from the SCCA.
Don't even get me started on body kits, suffice to say that in my opinion, any body mod that doesn't provide downforce or reduce lift is just wrong. Don't say that to the people who have extraneous kit, or they may hit you with their purse. Peace out.

Honestly, I'm not a racer just have a little info about it. Based from my game that I play once.
There three kinds of cars that street racers choose depend on their skill. (for example, I good at handling).
1. Muscle - A car that has good acceleration. Have a powerful engine and has a maximum torque. These is usually used in drag racing.
2. Tuners (I like this cars) - A car that has perfect handling. Usually good at turning sharp turns.
3. Exotic - from the word itself a rare type of car. Sometimes called "super cars". Good at speed.
First thing the racer or just a simple driver who wants to have a own perfect car, they first modified their in order to improve its performance and handling and better suit the owner's driving style.
The first thing they modify are:
* Engine
*Suspension
* and the last the body (where the design is apply).
There some auto shops that provide parts for the car or you could buy your own parts. There are some shops that provide good quality parts or even in the Internet. I 'm not sure but some person tend to buy parts from black market or certain junks shop..

ok common things are intake ,exhaust, headers, these help the engine breath better so more power is given a computer chip gives more output cuz it changes the volume of everything from the engine the're too many things to list but there are alot of factors as far as performance some swap engines for example a civic might have a crappy engine to start off with so we'll swap it for a acura gsr engine cuz it's more powerful than the regular civic it is tricky cuz it's not just about puting in the engine you have to change alot of other things like you computer gages etc as far as looks it's all up to your imagination there are alot of websites that sell styling parts such as bodykits,rear wings, rims, sloted fenders,carbon fiber hoods, some times there isn't parts for a certain car so they get them custom made the interiors of the car can get painted to a custom color like i said is whatever you want but when ever there is something to get made custome it dose cost more so pretty much all you need to make one of these cars is two things money and money oh yeah and money and also lets not forget money and some patience cuz if you ain't got no money then you have to save up until you have enough thats why some "projectcars" can take years to finish

My four cylinder turbo Dodge Colt is 375 horsepower. Would you like to race? Ps. Yes Fiesta's are crap. Old muscle cars are awesome, but for true all around performance, you just can't beat a well tuned sports car like a Supra, or an Acura NSX.
