Has anyone had one? Did it hurt?

I'm having one next week, in the morning. I work on my feet for 6 hours a day. Should I take the day off from work, or will I be OK and not in pain?

If there is pain or discomfort, how long did it last?

Did the actually process of the colposcopy hurt? Did you take anything before hand? Did the help for the pain?

before going for one i would take 2 advil or so. about 1 hr before hand. depending on how well you tolerate pain... it can be nothing or very painful. the most common complaint is cramping and spotting.
they go in like they are going to do a pap and they will cover your cervix w/ and iodine solution (for sterilizing purposes) then the dr will take this long skinny metal "pipe" thing and insert it into your vagina, then push a button on the end of it and it piches a tiny tiny tiny piece of your cervix off....
the whole thing lasts about 1-2 minutes....

A colposcopy is a procedure that allows a physician to examine a woman’s vulva, vagina and cervix. This is achieved through the use of a colposcope, an instrument that shines a light on the cervix and magnifies the tissue being inspected. Colposcopy is usually performed as a follow-up test to a screening Pap smear, in which the classification suggests the need to rule out possible abnormal or potentially cancerous cells.

During the procedure, a vinegar solution (acetic acid) is applied to the cervix or area to be evaluated with a cotton swab. This solution will react with the abnormal cells – abnormal tissue will appear white – allowing it to be identified through the colposcope. A physician can magnify the image many times its normal size, making it easier to see abnormal cells. This white area also has certain changes seen with the colposcope affecting the surface appearance, texture and vessels in the abnormal area that will allow a directed biopsy sample to be taken.

It's been a few years, but I did have a colposcopy once. I would take the day off work, especially since you have a job that requires being on your feet (I'm an office worker, and I took the day off). It did hurt a bit, and I did have some cramping afterwards. But I was able to walk to the bus stop, and that eased the cramps a bit. Then I went home and went to bed.

I haven't had one done, but I work at an OBGYN clinic, so I get these kind of questions all the time.

It will be a bit uncomfortable, but nothing unbearable, and it shouldn't last for too long. It is common to have some cramping and spotting afterwards, so that's up to you whether or not you think you will be comfortable going to work afterwards.

You can usually take Ibuprofen or Tylenol beforehand, but check with your doctor to be sure. But otherwise, you should be fine, it'll just feel a little bit like a period for about a day or so afterwards. If you experience any heavy bleeding, or extreme cramping then you will need to speak with your doctor.

The process usually doesn't take that long, so it shouldn't be too difficult to deal with. Just remember to relax, breathe, and you'll be fine. If you tense up too much, the forceps inserted into the vaginal opening can hurt just a little bit, so just remember to relax.

Good Luck!

I have had two actually. An hour before, I have just gone and taken two advil and two tylenol (this is ok because they are two different medications). I have felt some stinging afterwards and a little bit of discharge. After sitting for maybe an hour or so, I have felt better. If you sit for a while, I think you'd be fine to work.

The prepping is what takes the longest. The actual procedure maybe takes 5-7 minutes. If you have anymore questions, feel free to message me or email.:)
