Most telemarketers are probably used to it and it's just part of their job, but I'm sure there are some who feel bad or like they did something wrong when people hang up on them. I actually admire their ability to put up with all the rude, insensitive people they must have to deal with. (Not that you're rude for hanging up on them, but some people go so far as to yell at them or similar things.) What I really hate is hearing about people who prank the telemarketers (pretend to be interested and waste 45 minutes of their time, etc.); it's hilarious to read or talk about potential pranks, but it's mean for people to actually do them...

So many of them are simply regurgitating prepared text that they don't even think of you as a person on the other end of the line. If you aren't going to buy what they're selling they'd just as soon you hang up so they can call someone else who might be a more willing mark. Just don't slam the phone down. Ease it down and go on about your business.
A great many of those telemarketing calls don't even involve people. They are 'canned' spiels, on tape, and they don't click over to a real person unless you reply. So in many cases you will simply be hanging up on a machine, that has no feelings whatsoever.

I worked in a call center as inbound tech support.
When I asked the telemarketers working in our center, they said if people hung up on them or were rude they'd just keep them on the list and/or add them to other lists so that the person would get even more calls!

Who cares, they need a better job than hassling people in their own homes. It should pretty much be illegal now for them to call you anyway. I was one once, I never took it personally - nature of the job. There are some lonely folks out there that actually enjoy someone to talk to.

Honestly I apprietiated it. I had a LONG list of calls to make. While it is always nice when someone is polite about it, if they are definitely not interested I would be very happy to simply move on.

I would imagine that it happens so often they build an emotional barrier and could care less.
Its routine -- move onto the next sucker.
