unemployment, employed but making so little that after rent and electric bill, car insurance (old clunker) we couldn't afford food.
Not on any assistance in over 5 years tho. My Hubby got into a company that pays decent and promotes from within. I can stay home with our 2 children. We don't have a lot but we do own our on home (older mobile home in a park. paid $300 and put a few thousand in to make it liveable) have 1 vehicle that just keeps going (early 90's with LOTS of miles).
But if my Hubby were to lose his job we'd be in trouble. We have a 401k and a small amount of savings but that's it.

I'm pretty sure food stamps aren't a hobby...
But no, I've never been on food stamps. People who are I imagine are because they can't otherwise afford to buy food. Its a sad and I'm sure, humilliating state to be in, but the fact is as of 2005 there are 37 million people in this country living in poverty.

I've never been on food stamps personally but I used to be a caseworker who interviewed people and approved or denied them food stamp benefits.
The majority of the cases by far were immigrants collecting benefits for their children who were citizens. Most of them were employed (often with two or three jobs) but made very little money due to language and education gaps. That may be because of the high percentage of aliens in the part of Austin I live in.
Another large group were single mothers who were also poorly educated and either unemployed or holding very lowpaying jobs.
I also approved cases for lots of disabled people, homeless people, and people who'd been living right on the edge and then gotten sick or lost their jobs or spouses. You wouldn't believe the amount of college-educated, highly skilled people who came in 2001-2003 or so when the high tech companies started sending jobs overseas. I felt bad I had to turn so many of them down just because they still had their homes and cars.
My mother went in to apply for them once when I was in middle school. She was raising us alone, and due to a unscrupulous boss, her paychecks had been bouncing for a couple of months and she just needed a little help until things got cleared up. She got turned down and it was so crushing to all of us.
Well, that's about all I've got. Everyone has their own story.

Are you doing research for something? Yes, one of my relatives was. Divorce was the main reason; hence, low income.

If I didn't have the food stamps then I wouldn't have been able to spend my cash on cigs, booze, and drugs. Oh yeah, and diapers.

Why are you asking this in hobbies?
It looks like you are gathering evidence in order to judge or punish someone.
