Giraffes evolved to have long necks because they are a better suited trait for reaching high leaves.

Giraffes have long necks because they need the leaves that grow on top of the tree in their diets.

The reason they have long necks is really because they need to adapt into their environment. In Africa, there are lots of other herbivores that share the same patch of feeding ground.

Instead of fighting with other animals for grass, the giraffe grew a longer neck to eat the leaves on trees, no longer needing to fight with other hebivores.

Giraffes have long neck because the tops of trees are a long way up from their bodies. Except zoo giraffes - they have long necks because the zoo keepers keep putting their food at the top of big poles.
