What??? Let people decide how to spend their own money?? Subject liberal (in)competence to the scrutiny of the free market?? Children are the last captive audience they can infantilize. Why would they give that up?

Because most private schools don't want to participate in this program. When I lived in Florida, which has a voucher plan, a survey by the Miami-Herald revealed that 93% of the private schools statewide were not participating. The most common reason given was that they would not be allowed to screen potential students beforehand. By accepting public money, they would have to start accepting students they otherwise would reject, such as those with behavioral problems or underperformers. Also, many are single-sex schools. If they started accepting vouchers, they would have to admit members of the opposite sex or face discrimination charges. Many private schools do not have any accommodations for handicapped students and they would have to make them. Most private schools would rather remain private. They want to be able to retain the option of picking and choosing which students they will accept. They can get away with it because they are private. If they start taking vouchers, they won't be able to.

Being a product of public school - and a Democrat - I'm offended by the idea of school vouchers because they redistribute money AWAY from public schools toward private schools which are held to much less accountability than public schools are. That money could be better spent trying to improve public schools.

The true intent of the vouchers is to support church run private schools. They favor that sort of thing where public schools, properly run, can do as good or better job. It is the old, rather than face the problem just change the subject, ask them to leave or buy your way out. Cowardice.

The first amendment says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion".

If legislation is passed, to allow the use of federal funds to send children to catholic or other faith-based private schools, it is argued that this will contravene that first amendment clause.

I recognise that there ARE some pretty fine private schools. But I also am aware that in the early days of this country, taxes were levied on everyone, to fund local protestant churches (which is what lead to the first amendment), and I wouldn't like to see one step taken in that direction.

wouldn't that defeat the purpose? if we turn our private schools into public schools than wont the same problems arise? besides, private schools are made to teach students 1st, make money 2nd. That would defeat the idea of a Private school. the idea in whole does not make much sense. As a conservative i would think you would support the idea of capitalism in our own school system. More of a liberal than you thought?

Is anyone stopping you or anyone else from sending their children to private schools? Everyone is free to send their kids to the school of their choice. Couldn't people send their kids to private schools without a public handout?

I never said that public schools do not work. We just need to make improvements to them. A lot of improvements. Vouchers will not fix the public school system which is necessary to our society.

Those schools are most likely interested in the money they receive from more well off parents. They provide safe haven from the public and not so college preparatory schools.

Because they believe that the system is more important than the individual. And letting a student get a good education doesn't help the system.

Because those vouchers are paid for by tax payers money, and the tax payers have no say as to how the school is run. Economically, it should be better to use that same money to improve public schools.
