Ok, so my brother just moved out on his own. He went to turn on his utilities -- electric, gas, telephone all that necessary stuff. Anyway, the companies asked for his social security number which turned out to already be in their files.....but under the wrong name --a relatives name for that matter!!
How is this? Can somebody just give any social# when turning on their utilities? I thought all those companies like AT&T ran a credit or background check to make sure that all given information was correct -- don't they?

Now my brother just recently went to get a loan and guess what?....uh-huh....same relative's name pops up -- using his social again!!( He claims to be innocent and that somebody made a mistake....huh)
My brother has already gone to the social security office and they said that all information under his ss# is correct......all under his own name.

How did this idiot of a relative do this? What should be done? HOw do we straighten this mess out??

Print copy of credit reports.
File police report.

Submit letters to all 3 credit agencies and include the police report numbers.

Make note of all transactions that take place prior to the age of 18. Since minors can not enter into legal contracts, any agreements made before his age of 18 can be null and void. (easier than simply saying 'its not me')

Contact ALL the companies on his credit report, submit similar letters to those companies, closing all accounts.

Most of the credit companies will also file fraud charges as well.

To top it all off, he can file a civil suit against his relative, to compensate him for damages done, time spent, and pain/suffering.

This is identity theft. He will have to call all three credit bureaus, report the cousin to the police , go to the site www.identitytheft.org to find out what to do or just type in identity theft and a page comes up with differant places to help.. Call the police first to stop the cousin from using your ID anymore. Try to get a new social security number ,I don't know if you can but you can try.

The company may have checked the number. The relative probably used your brother's name as well. In that case, all the information would match. Checking his address would not help. After all, they ARE claiming they just moved. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of identity theft is done by someone you know.

Unfortunately, it is that simple alot of utility company's you can have the utilities turned on by just a phone call. You can actually apply for a change of social security numbers - give them the reason, it only takes a few minutes.lol

This is what is called stolen identity & there is a law against it. I'm sure the district attorney would like to hear about it.

It's called fraud. File a Police Report and have him prosecuted. If his shady dealings wind up on YOUR credit you are screwed.
