whose name escapes me (but one of the big ones) released a single under a pseudonym (Chris Gaines?). It was a non-country tune and was tied in to a movie project about a rock star of the same name. (The Lamb?). I don't remember anything else about it and never heard of such a a movie coming out. What's the story?

The movie didn't tank because the movie was NEVER released! It's still sitting on a shelf in a movie studio held prisoner by the paperwork of changing studio owners. The link above me to the imdb.com is linked to the 'documentry' NOT the real movie.
The 'Chris Gaines' album was the soundtrack to the movie, about a rock star. The soundtrack was released a month before the movie was to be released, to build up momentum for the movie. However, in that 30 day period, the studio changed hands and the new president did not want to release a Garth Brooks movie at the time because he didn't want it competing with whatever else was out at the time. Meanwhile, too many people start claiming rights to the movie and so the movie never gets released. Now, we/us can see there's a new GB's cd out called 'Chris Gaines' and we/us know it's rock and not country. But since the movie was cancelled they never showed any movie trailers so we/us at the time didn't know it was the soundtrack to a movie. We just though Garth Brooks had lost his mind! LOL! Now we know better... ;-) In a recent interview, Garth said he still hoped they would release his movie one day and then everything to do with the 'Chris Gaines' album would finally make sense. Okay, now I know way too much about Garth Brooks, considering I've only heard him do 2 songs...lol ;P

The artist was Garth Brooks. As I recall, it was supposed to be his alter ego or something, but most fans were just as confused as you and I, and the movie and album tanked.
