Well I don't regularly play them, but I've played a hurdy gurdy, a shawm and a cornette (also called a zink) before. They're all very strange sounding mediaeval instruments. The shawm's modern equivalent is the oboe, but the others don't have a modern instrument that sounds anything like them.

I've played a prepared piano as well - that's basically a piano with all sorts of strange things put between the strings, erasers, bolts, bits of wire - it makes it sound like bells and percussion.

You can listen to a shawm, hurdy gurdy and cornette (it's under zink) here http://www.music.iastate.edu/antiqua/instrumt.html
