Silicon has a valence of +4 and oxygen has a valence of -2. Since there is one silicon and four oxygens in the silica tetrahedron the electrical charge is: +4 + (-2*4) = 4-8 = -4. The overall electrical charge on the silica tetrahedron is negative four.

The positivly charged protons equalize with the negatively chared electrons in most atoms. For example, if there are four negative electrons and four positive protons, then the overall charge is zero because... - 4 + 4 = 0 0 means a neutral charge.. My answer would be: The overall electrical charge of an atom is neutral because there is an equal amount of negatively charged and positively charged particles in an atom.
