I need an inspection done on my car before the end of August. My check engine light is on, so I went to Auto Zone and they say it is the oxygen sensor that makes that light stay on. In order to pass my inspection, I have to get a new oxygen sensor placed in my car. If I don't I'll have to pay for the first inspection, fail it, get whatever it is fixed, and then pay for another inspection. I'd rather skip all that and just get it fixed before it is inspected. I drive a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire GE. Are oxygen sensors easy to put in? In other words, is this something I could do by myself (the part costs $70 at autozone) or am I better off just getting somebody else to do it and pay them? I'm trying to save money here, I am working my way through college. I just want the smartest choice.

Thanks for the help...

Most oxygen sensors that old are seized in the pipe and are not easy to get out. Just pay someone to do it and get it over with. That way if they mess it up, it's their problem. Find a reputable shop, also.

Why pay twice for something you can to once (test that is). The O2 sensor is easy to change as long as you take your time. You will need a special tool to remove it. Autozone sells that big socket. Just spray some pentrating oil before remove it because it will be hard to take it off due to corrosion.

Just bite the bullet and have it done. It is not that complicated to do, but it might be seized on the exhaust pipe and could be a bear to get off. The labor shouldn't be that bad, so get it done. Plus you'll save money on the extra test.

good luck.

Most oxygen sensors are easy to remove.... you could do it your self, some are hard to get to.... but most of the time they are easy to change. I have done too many to remember.

If you don't know what your doing under the hood, pay somebody to do it right. That's the cheapest in the long run.
