My world falls apart, crumbles, “The center cannot hold.” There is no integrating force, only the naked fear, the urge of self-preservation. I am afraid. I am not solid, but hollow. I feel behind my eyes a numb, paralyzed cavern, a pit of hell, a mimicking nothingness. I never thought. I never wrote, I never suffered. I want to kill myself, to escape from responsibility, to crawl back abjectly into the womb. I do not know who I am, where I am going—and I am the one who has to decide the answers to these hideous questions. I long for a noble escape from freedom—I am weak, tired, in revolt from the strong constructive humanitarian faith which presupposes a healthy, active intellect and will. There is nowhere to go… –Sylvia Plath, journal, November 3, 1952

“Depression is nourished by a lifetime of ungrieved and unforgiven hurts”
Penelope Sweet

“I start to feel like I can’t maintain the facade any longer, that I may just start to show through. And I wish I knew what was wrong. Maybe something about how stupid my whole life is. I don’t know. Why does the rest of the world put up with the hypocrisy, the need to put a happy face on sorrow, the need to keep on keeping on?... I don’t know the answer, I know only that I can’t. I don't want any more vicissitudes, I don't want any more of this try, try again stuff. I just want out. I’ve had it. I am so tired. I am twenty and I am already exhausted.”
Elizabeth Wurtzel

"Depression is the inability to construct a future”
Rollo May
“...Depression is not sobbing and crying and giving vent, it is plain and simple reduction of feeling...People who keep stiff upper lips find that it's damn hard to smile.”
Judith Guest

"I felt that his chance was to put all the past behind him. I hoped that the grief which now seemed intolerable would be softened by the lapse of time, and a merciful forgetfulness would help him to take up once more the burden of life. He was young still, and in a few years he would look back on all his misery with a sadness in which there would be something not unpleasurable. Sooner or later he would marry some honest soul in Holland, and I felt sure he would be happy. I smiled at the thought of the vast number of bad pictures he would paint before he died."

(_The Moon and Sixpence_ by W. Somerset Maugham)

There are several really good quotes that exemplify the Great Depression. I cannot offhand remember them, but I did read them in a book called 1001 great quotes that I found in the bookstore several years ago. They may still have it, I know they have books on quotes still.

More of an inspirational quote for someone who is depressed, but it has always stuck in my mind:

(Mat 11:28-30)
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking.
