Conservatives try to hijack many social issues such as marriage, right to life, morality, patriotism etc... because they have little else for which they can stand. But if you examine any of those issues closely, you'll see that cons are quite hypocritical and no better than liberals on all of these issues.

That's because many conservatives have only one idea of what is the correct type of family and totally disregard that there are many others. They continually promote the nuclear family as the traditional form but clearly haven't done much checking on their history. The nuclear family is largely a post-WWII phenomenon when people started moving away from their parents or other relatives by migrating to the suburbs. Before that, extended families or those living in multi-generation households were the most common. People grew up knowing their aunts, uncles, cousins and didn't see them once every few years or so.

The only ones that say that are the minions of right wing talk radio, who adhere to the Gobbels method of rhetoric. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
Joseph Goebbels quotes
It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion.
Joseph Goebbels
Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.
Joseph Goebbels
The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly – it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.

its just a meaningless insult.
many people forget the family as we know it hasn't been around that long. the family structure has changed many times in the past and it is changing again now. many people on the left have modern values and embrace the future and people who do not slander them for it
-even a GOP candidate said Hillary shouldn't be castigated for staying with bill because its better to work through a marriage than get divorced. when it comes to hateful people you can not win no matter what you do-

Going back about thirty years, the right-wing religious coalitions felt Jimmy Carter betrayed them because he wouldn't bow to their agenda, even though he was a fundamentalist Christian and the 'Bible Belt' put him in office. So, they went party shopping, the Republicans wanted an increased political base and said 'Welcome!", and Ronald Reagan happily took up their agenda. Since then we've seen the Republican party steadily move away from 'fiscal conservatism' and towards 'social conservatism' because of pressure from, and bowing to, the religious coalitions.
Basically, some (not all) feel that the Republican Party has a monopoly on God and 'family values'. By setting themselves up on the 'moral pedestal', the implication is that all others that are not with them are lacking in family values and morality. Barry Goldwater, who stood for real (fiscal) conservatism, had an opinion about his beloved party being hijacked by the religious right:

What are family values again? I've never seen a proper definition of it. And what makes you people believe the left doesn't have family values?
Cons/Reps(generally speaking of course. I'm referring to the ones who make statements like this) are the garbage of this country. They will say anything regardless if they can back it up. Any Con that says the left has less family values probably also hates gays, poor people, non-whites, non-Christians, the truth, science, etc..People that believe that are not the brightest ones we have to offer. That's why many of them resort to 4th grade politics. You know, name calling and childish accusations.

A divorce has nothing to do with family values. Having good family values also means doing what's best for the family. If the parents can't be happy together, then there's no way the kids are going to be happy. A divorce was meant for people to be happy, who were otherwise miserable with eachother. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made to make the family stronger, even if it means divorce.

it has nothing to really do with left or right. i know plenty of LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES who have been married had plenty of kids and stuff. It all really depends on how the people are raised by their parents and who they hang out with. People just say the left has no values cuz of Bill Clinton with his impeachement and stuff. Also Liberals like to say the same about conservatives. Its all because people think they r better than eachother. like racism but with political parties.

people say that because the left allows people to break the law(illegal immigrants), and protects people who aren't straight and christian. the old family values are to stay in school, go to church, marry the opposite sex, and follow the law. so what the left does contradicts that. however i feel family values have changed. people are different. we just have to accept that. I'm a conservative but i am black and i am an atheist. i don't feel I'm wrong for being any of this. family values have changed.

Stereotypes they hear off of T.V. and radio....people tend to believe many things they hear. Since many Republicans are devout Christians they tend to believe anyone who does not lives a looser type lifestyle with less rules is immoral and has poor values. If it does not fit their system of what they think a family should be it means you have poor family values. I grew up in a devout Christian home so I know what this is like first hand. When I got older I finally learned that there are all different kinds of families, and just because it does not fit under the Christian standard for what a "good" family is, does not mean it is immoral or that the family does not have values. Liberals tend to have a looser and less strict ideas that limit what a family is.
