It depends on the organization, the event and past history of participants.

Most large events are able to handle payment in any form. The smaller ones tend to be cash or check. They get hurt by the 4% surcharge of credit cards. They may go cash only because of a high rate of bad checks. The most important thing if you are paying by cash is to get a signed receipt.

Just read the payment options or contact someone that's working for the event about it. That person will generally be the event organizer,or something close to that title.

Many entry fees nowadays will not accept cash, unless you're paying at the actual location. If you're paying for an entry fee, such as a competition, you usually have to pay by some form of plastic, check, or money order and the money must be recieved by a certain date. If you're paying online, then it's either the number on your credit/debit card or possibly paypal.
