There are a lot of products that people use without thinking about where they come. Besides the meat products most people naturally think of there is gelatin which is derived from a chemical in the hide of pigs. This is used in many frostings, jello, marshmallows, etc. Cheeses are all made with an enzyme called Rennett. This is traditionally taken from the stomach lining of a slaughtered calf or lamb. Fortunately there is a bioengineered rennett now that is used in up to 60% of American cheeses and does not require slaughter. Unfortunately the USDA does not require cheese makers to note whether they use vegetarian rennett or not.

Besides the horse meat you talk about, you also have to remember they're slaughtered for things like glue. If people are opposed to the slaughter of these different animals, there are a lot of products you have to stop buying to not reinforce the industry's justification.

Horse slaughter is done for several reasons, not just the meat.

Old horses, injured horses, crippled horses, horses too badly sick to live comfortably, all these need a humane way to die and be disposed of. It's not like burying a bunny or a dog, you're talking about a LARGE animal.

The meat is not used in this country very much. It's sent overseas where it's normal for people to eat horse. Just like in Asia where it's normal to eat dog. Different cultures, different ways of thinking.

The only difference between horse meat and cow meat is sentimentality (and I do acknowledge that I am a hypocrite because I could not eat a horse because of the emotions I have towards them).

And seriously, do you think hamburgers grow on trees next to the twinkie tree? Every time you eat something, something has died for it. Whether it be a cow, a horse, or a legume.
Eat thoughtfully.

Horse slaughter is a big topic of interest on several boards. I have been following the debate over at Rural Heritage.

If anyone opposes the slaughter of horses, tell me what you think should be done with the hundreds of thousands of horses that used to go to the slaughterhouses?

"If I remember right the article said they processed 100,000 horses a year." http://www.ruralheritage.com/messageboard/frontporch/9215.htm

"With new laws making it difficult to send horses off to the slaughterhouse when they are no longer suitable for racing or work, auction houses are glutted with horses they can barely sell, and rescue organizations have run out of room.

Some owners who cannot get rid of their horses are letting them starve; others are turning them loose in the countryside.

Some people who live near the strip mines in the mountains of impoverished eastern Kentucky say that while horses have long been left to roam free there, the number now may be in the thousands, and they are seeing herds three times bigger than they did just five years ago."

I am not saying I support the slaughter of horses. But what can be done with all the horses that are unusable and unsellable? Most people can not afford to keep pet horses. And, as noted in the discussion on Rural Heritage, many rescue organizations have run out of funds and/or space for unwanted horses.

In the US horse slaughter is directly related to over-breeding, the racing industry, and PMU farms. Much of the slaughter is done outside of the US, in Canada and Mexico, or by foreign companies within the US.

If you're bothered by the slaughter, you'd be very disturbed by what they go through before they die.

The Humane Society is working to ban the slaughter of US horses.

If you want to get involved:

In reality, the only way to stop it, is to stop those who are creating the excess animals. There aren't enough new homes for those horses, and like all of the excess dogs and cats, the excess horses will be destroyed - one way or the other.

If slaughter is banned, those horses would be humanely euthanized and their bodies sent to a rendering plant.

I don't like either "option".
