A muscle car is a high-performance automobile. The term principally refers to American, Australian and South African models and generally describes a rear wheel drive mid-size car with a large, powerful V8 engine and special trim, intended for maximum torque on the street or in drag racing competition. It is distinguished from sports cars, which were customarily and coincidentally considered smaller, two-seat cars, or GTs, two-seat or 2+2 cars intended for high-speed touring and possibly road racing.

Howdy,

The term "muscle car" refers to an American automobile with a powerful engine that's sometimes been modified. A Dodge Charger (like the one used on Dukes of Hazzard) is a typical muscle car. These macho mobiles aren't particularly graceful, but their unnecessarily large engines and relatively affordable price tag more than make up for it.

The always excellent "HowStuffWorks" explains how muscle cars work. The site also mentions that the term muscle car
"was coined in 1964 for midsize Pontiacs equipped with a new performance option featuring a potent 389-cubic-inch V-8." Muscle cars stayed popular through the 70s and are experiencing something of a resurgence today.

Muscle cars are from the late 60's early 70's and were typically a mid-sized (for that era) two-door car with big nasty powerful engines, all kinds of performance options, and were made with a little bit of 'fun to drive' in mind. The big three were all trying to outdo each other with bigger engines, faster times, and generally cooler cars. The cars were big old speed machines that 'flexed their muscle' on the street and strip. The muscle car era began to die with the introduction of more and more emphasis on fuel economy and tigher governmental restrictions. A sad time indeed. Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, GTO's, Chargers, Firebirds, Torinos... the list goes on. It was automotive perfection and it will never be seen again.

Muscle for power..... started with the late 60's V-8 American cars with big V 8 engines, large cubic inches with alot of horsepower and torque..... Chevy, Dodge, Pontiac, Ford, Plymouth, Mercury all had powerful Muscle cars. The muscle car era was ended 1974 as the last year as 1975 started all the EPA and emmisions and smog pumps, sensors and all that junk just robbed horsepower.....
