One million Turks protest ahead of early elections

IZMIR, Turkey (Reuters) - At least a million people took to the streets in Turkey's third city on Sunday for the fourth major rally in a month against the Islamist-rooted government ahead of elections in July.

Organisers, who accuse the government of seeking to undermine separation of religion and state in the overwhelmingly Muslim country, hoped the protest would unite the fragmented opposition ahead of the parliamentary polls.

"Turkey is secular and will remain secular," the protesters, predominantly urban middle class people at this festive rally, chanted. "No to sharia (Islamic law)."

I find it interesting that many Christians in the US fail to see the similarities in Christian fundamentalism and and Muslim fundamentalism. They feel it is OK to impose there Christian believes on people though the government, even claim this is a "Christian" country. In the same breath condemn the exact same behavior as it relates to Islam.
The government MUST remain SECULAR and religious groups of all types should not attempt to influence public policy.

Many preachers do not understand the meaning of the scripture that calls for "rendering unto Caesar those things that are Caesar's and render unto God the things that are God's". That scripture calls for complete separation of church and state due to the fact that when the two are mixed, persecution is the result. An example of religious leaders having political power can be found in the catholic church in the dark ages. If one believed that God was involved in the muslim religion, which He is not, the effect of the imams on the religion is what fuels terrorism. It is always a bad thing.

America should stop its' march toward becoming an Islamic Theocracy.
Secularism is also good in Turkey, because the dominant alternative is the Islamic Death Cult - never a good basis for a government.

Don't care about Turkey but secularism is bad in America. There isn't a single non-Christian in my town, so why shouldn't we be allowed to have the ten commandments on our public buildings?
