Three lab science courses are required in my state to graduate, so it's not like I wanted this class. In a few weeks we will be doing fetal pig dissections--something I am strongly, ethically against.
They can't force me to do it, can they? I wouldn't mind writing a twenty page essay on the subject, but I refuse to actually take part in this cruel practice. I would almost understand if the class was about eight students who were truly dedicated to science, but most of the kids won't use this information later in life and laugh at the creature who wasn't able to live.
Help?

It all depends on what you`re majoring in. If your major is biology you should probably dissect it. I skipped fetal pig dissection in high school biology but I am taking a biology course this semester in college and I have to dissect one again. I am going to do it simply to look at all the organs. Not to make fun or laugh at the animal. I mean it`s dead. I know some pople feel strong about animal abuse and animal dissection but it`s part of your education.

When it comes to this sort of thing, most teachers understand that not every student is comfortable with a dissection. Usually, they allow you to turn in some sort of report as an equivalent to the dissection. That's what happened to me when I took biology in high school. Talk to your teacher about it. She'll understand. If all else fails, and you REALLY don't want to do it, ask your parents to talk to the teacher or a counselor. Good luck!

If it helps, the fetal pigs aren't killed for the purposes of dissection. We dissected them in a physiology class, and our teacher told us that they are taken from pregnant pigs that are slaughtered for meat. I figure that if they are already dead, some benefit might as well come from it.
I'm a biology nut anyways, so I'm biased, but I developed a new appreciation for the order and complexity of life through the dissections. You might not have practical use for the knowledge that would would gain, but it contributes to the general understanding of life and the human body that (just my opinion) everyone should have.

Ths first thing you need to do is go to the instructor of the class and explain your opnion to them. Since they are likely a biology die hard like many of us teachers are you will need to present your case in a forthright but not accusing manner. Explain your willingness to do an alternative assignement. Some instructors will have one others will not.
One thing to know about fetal pigs. No one is killing the pigs for dissections. The fetal pigs are a product of butchering hogs and at times the hogs are pregnant. The fetal pigs would die either way. Scientist being one who want to find everyway to explain scientific concepts to everyone use the fetal pigs to help others discover for themselves how a body works.
It is possible your instructor will let you off from the assignment or they may feel you can't learn the information a better way.

Every instructor that I've encountered never forced a dissection, including my anatomy courses where human cadavers were dissected. However, instructors may ask the student to observe the dissection even if they don't directly participate. While you may have legitimate concerns with dissection, there is much value to the exercise. Speak to your instructor and see how he/she feels.

In my biology class we were able to pair off and one person would do the dissection while I took the notes. Ask the professor if something like this can be done

I don't think they can force you to do this. I know I didn't do it, I'm the same as you. I find it cruel and horrible. Most ofthe kids will just goof around anyway, and won't use any of the information. It's not even important.
You have to talk to your instructor about it.

I don't like those kind of dissections either, but I went through zoology...its really not as bad as it seems
I believe It is important because it reveals a better understanding.
