Well, I've done a poll of 7 scouts who saw both teams play. 6 picked Colorado. 1 picked Pittsburgh.

The 1991 Penguins (16-8) weren't as good as the 1992 Penguins (16-5, 11 game winning streak to end the playoffs)

The 2001 Avalanche were 16-7, beat the 2000 Cup Champs, and Roy had a GAA less than 2.00. The Avalanche beat their opposition by just over a goal a game, the Penguins beat their opposition by just under a goal a game.

Personally, I'll take the 2001 Avalanche. They had a much better defense (10 Norris and 3 Vezinas) than anything Pittsburgh had to face in 1991!

WAIT?? WHAT??

Pittsburgh had a poor defense in 91 and 92.. forgive me but didn't they win the Stanley Cup in those years??

Larry Murphy and Ulf Samuellson were two of the best defensemen in the league. The Penguins' 91 team was MUCH better than that Avalanche team. NOT to put down that team, they were loaded, but come on, you couldn't touch that Pens 92 team.

THey could play every hockey system. They could beat you slowed down, run and gun.. it didn't matter what you threw at them. Let's not forget Barrasso was getting up there in age. He still played great though.

I'm not saying the Pens would sweep them but they still win a seven game sereis against them.

Colorado in 5.

Pittsburgh had a poor defense in both 91 and 92.

Roy pretty much owned Lemieux and company (Jagr was on the 2nd line in 91, not a factor like in 1992).

In 37 gamnes against Mario, Roy only lost 5.

Colorado had the 4nd best offense (#1 in the West) and 3rd best defense in 2001. They also finished first overall, 7 points clear of Detroit and Jersey.

Is this a serious question?

The 1991 Penguins weren't that good. 88 points. Colorado had 118 points in 2001.

I'm picking Colorado in 4. Patrick rules! Mario sucks!

Pens.

The Avalance had stellar firepower as well as an extremely aggressive squad. However, even no names such as Kevin Stevens, Larry Murphy, Ulf Samuelsson, Tom Barrasso, etc. were actually competitive to players such as Gretzky, LaFontaine, Messier, Roy, Belfour, Sundin, and Roenick.

The way the Penguins handled the puck and their chemistry together was one of the greatest of all time.

Penguins in 6 or 7.. hands down.

I put this through a computer simulator, and the 2001 Avalanche won in 6 games

tough. but the Pens just have overwhelming firepower. they are perhaps one of the best post expansion teams in the NHL... But Roy was the best goaltender (still is, actually)

However, even Roy wouldn't be able to get 4 shutouts in one series. The pens were too strong. 91 pens in seven. split the series with each team winning 2 home and one away, and the pens win the cup on home ice in an exciting game seven.

I depends if Pittsburgh lays down for Bourque the way the Devils did. Did anyone notice that Jersey just happened to show no effort in games 6 and 7?

They are my two favorite teams, this is a heartbreaker to choose. I've never seen the Pens of the 90s play, and they didn't have as much go-to players as the Avs did. They also played in a defensively easier era, they lacked a rock-solid goalie. So I'm gonna say, the Avs would win in game 7 in triple OT.
