Kickdown is the action of an AUTOMATIC transmission, when you floor it to pass and it kicks down from one gear to a lower gear. In a standard, it does not kick down, you perform the downshift from one gear to another.

Even in '76 there were automatic transmissions, but manual means that the transmission uses a clutch. Some manual transmissions had the gear change on the steering column, but from what you describe this is definitely a "stick shift"

I've been driving a standard transmission for 15 years, and I have no earthly idea what kickdown means. That's a new one on me.

Nothing. Kick down is an automatic transmission term meaning you have stepped hard enough on the gas that the transmission was forced to downshift a gear.

I would say that means to move the shifter into neutral, or shift down one gear. ex- from 4th to 3rd. Personally I haven't used that term. I used" knocked down out of gear" for neutral. Down shift for moving from one gear to the next gear down.
